As the world pushes for better and more sustainable transport solutions for an ever-growing urban population, there has been a lot of focus on efficiency, but not enough energy is spent on improving the consumer experience itself. CYKEL was born from this realization when Daniel Godfrey (Co-Founder and CEO) found himself working in a Vancouver eBike shop. The eBikes were well-built and provided a fantastic mode of transport but it very quickly became apparent that the interfaces on these eBikes were outdated and frustrating for users.
There was a lot of opportunity to innovate on this part of the experience and bring better data in a clearer way to riders to enhance their enjoyment, safety, and engagement with the bike itself. Daniel set out to create a prototype of what something like this could look like and that’s when he met Simon Chapman (Co-Founder and Head of Product Development) at a local maker space.
Simon was a rapid prototyping specialist and product designer who was immediately drawn to the idea – recognizing the tremendous potential that there was to elevate the riding experience. Together they set out to create a new device that could be retrofitted to an eBike and stream important data to a user’s smartphone, thus providing a significant upgrade to the tiny and not very user-friendly screens that were the status quo. His involvement brought crucial experience in terms of creating the device and developing the idea further, and their partnership would be one that unlocked the potential for a brand-new eBike technology company.
And thus, in September 2022, Cykel Technologies Inc. was born.
